ESR or Erythrocyte sedimentation Rate

ESR( Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) is one of the tests done using your blood to help support a certain diagnosis, and as such, a high ESR is not a disease per se.
Your ESR increased because there might be some kind of inflammation or infection in your blood. Also, it increases during pregnancy, anaemia and some autoimmune conditions.
The explanation is simple. Some abnormal substances (mainly proteins) cause an abnormal reaction in the blood masking your red blood cells (erythrocytes) clump together (which should not ). As a result the clumped RBCs sink faster than it should giving you the high ESR.
So, as there is an array of diseases that can cause increased ESR, you have to support the diagnosis with other investigations, which your doctor probably would have told you to perform. So get the treatment accordingly, after the final diagnosis has been made.
